VPS (Virtual Private Server)
Platforms & Tools
A VPS is a remote always-on server that traders use to run automated strategies and Expert Advisors 24/5 with low latency and no local downtime.

What is a VPS in trading?
A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is a remote, virtualized computer that stays powered on and connected to the internet continuously, independent of any trader’s personal computer. In a trading context, a VPS is most commonly used to keep a trading platform — and any Expert Advisor or automated strategy running on it — online around the clock, even when the trader’s own laptop is switched off or loses internet connection.
Why traders use a VPS
Forex markets trade close to 24 hours a day across global sessions, but a home computer isn’t always available or reliable during that whole window: power cuts, internet outages, restarts, and simply going to sleep can all interrupt a strategy that needs to keep running. A VPS solves this by hosting the platform on infrastructure that’s designed to stay online continuously.
Key reasons traders adopt a VPS:
- Uptime for automated strategies. Algorithmic trading and Expert Advisors need to be running at all times to catch every signal; a VPS removes dependence on a personal device staying on.
- Lower latency. VPS providers often locate servers physically close to a broker’s trade servers or major financial data centers, which can reduce the time it takes for an order to reach the market compared with a home internet connection.
- Stability during volatile periods. A dedicated server is less likely to be affected by a local power or internet failure at exactly the moment a trade needs to execute or close.
Where to get a VPS
Some brokers offer a VPS (sometimes free of charge if minimum trading-volume or deposit conditions are met) as part of their service, while independent VPS providers also offer plans aimed specifically at traders. Terms, pricing, and eligibility vary by broker, so it’s worth checking a specific broker’s current offer directly rather than assuming free VPS access is universal.
Why it matters for traders
A VPS is not necessary for manual, discretionary trading where a trader is at the screen making each decision. It becomes important once a strategy depends on being executed automatically and continuously — without one, an Expert Advisor stops working the moment the host computer goes offline, potentially leaving a position unmanaged.
Quick recap
- A VPS is a remote, always-on server used to keep automated trading strategies running continuously.
- It’s most relevant to traders using Expert Advisors or other algorithmic strategies, not manual discretionary trading.
- Benefits include 24/5 uptime, lower latency, and protection against local power/internet outages.
- Availability and cost vary by broker and third-party provider — check current terms before relying on one.
